5 Lesser Known Places to Visit in Wayanad with Family

The rural district of Wayanad is located in the Western Ghats in the state of Kerala. Its high altitude and low population allow for a thriving environment that is lush and beautiful. There is abundant wildlife in this forested area based at the southern tip of the Deccan Plateau as well as many beautiful places to visit in Wayanad.

Chembra Peak

One of the highest peaks of the Western Ghats at 2,100 m above sea level, the Chembra Peak is an easy call for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The abundant forest cover aside, the peak also offers camping opportunities at the summit. Trekking groups visit the place often. It is advisable to seek permission and to join a group if you want to go trekking and camping.

Edakkal Caves

Delve into the history of Wayanad with the Edakkal Caves. This pristine mystery is at least 8,000 years old with the latest dating techniques. The caves have enjoyed a lot of attention over the years.

They have been associated with everything from the folklore of the Ramayana to pictorial connections with the Indus Valley Civilization. Banasura Sagar Dam

Named after King Mahabali’s son Banasura, this dam was built to collect water from the Kabini River. The dam is the largest Earth Dam in India and is a popular tourist spot for boating and trekking up the Banasura Hill.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread over an area of nearly 345 sqm., this wildlife sanctuary is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and home to a large variety of animal life such as bison, deer, elephant, and tiger. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It also houses many species of birds. Here, you can engage in nature walks and safaris with the family.
